During the reign of King Louis XIV anyone could enter his palace at Versailles as long as they followed certain rules!

The Palace of Versailles is known for being one of the most expensive palaces of all time, and is now a popular tourist attraction. There is gold pretty much anywhere that you can put gold, and there are hundreds of sculptures scattered around the property! Although we have to pay to enter in this modern day and age, that was not always the case! When Louis XIV opened the palace in 1682, he insisted that the castle doors remain open to anyone who wished to visit his residence!

Thus, the gates were kept open all day with guards at the entrances to protect the king. As a result of this, they made sure no firearms entered the castle and the guards even inspected the horse drawn carriages! All King Louis XIV asked was that his subjects followed certain rules if they wanted to gain entry. For example, the visitors were required to wear a hat and a sword. If they didn’t have one, they could rent one at the entrance! I imagine everyone looked rather dapper. Check out the source to find out more about Versailles
