A Korean War marine stayed behind and sacrificed himself to let his unit retreat because they had no more bullets!

Private First Class Herbert K. Pililaau is a marine that should be remembered forever because of his Medal of Honor worthy sacrifice. While he and his unit were fighting off the enemy, their ammunition had basically depleted completely. Knowing that his unit wouldn’t get away unless they received covering fire, he made the ultimate sacrifice. With the little ammo he had left, he continued to fire his automatic weapon at the enemy, and continued to throw all his grenades.

Whenever he ran out of both bullets and grenades, he pulled out his knife and engaged the enemy in hand to hand combat! Eventually he was overcome by the number of enemy soldiers that were running at him, and he received a fatal wound. When he was found, all that remained was his trench knife gripped in his hands and 40 dead enemies!
