Might sound hard to believe, but bat bombs were an experimental World War II weapon developed by the United States. How did it worked? Simple! Bat bombs are large bomb casings that would open above cities and release bats with small, timed incendiary bombs!
And not only that; the bats would find somewhere to roost, and the city would burn down! When the United States decided to create this kind of bombs during World War II they looked at four biological factors that gave promise to their plan:
- Bats can be found in large numbers throughout the caves of the United States of America.
- Bats can carry more than their own weight while flying.
- Bats hibernate, and therefore food would not be required to feed them while dormant.
- Bats fly in darkness! So an attack at night would be promising
However, the project took so much time to complete that by the end of World War II the project was cancelled and overtaken in the race for a quick end to the war by the atomic bomb project. We all know how powerful the atomic bomb is, but can you imagine how interesting it would’ve been to see bat bombs being used in your favorite first shooter war game?
