Imagine this: You wake to a beautiful day in Bangladesh. You do your morning rituals and then head off to work. You sit down at your desk and start doing CAPTCHAs. Thousands of them. For eight hours.

For every thousand of them you do, you earn between $0.80 and $1.20. Some sources say that the pay is as low as fifty cents per thousand. That’s a reality for some people in Bangladesh, China, India, and many other nations. It’s worth it to the spammers because they take in big enough profits (typically from scams).

The way it works is when the spam program reaches a CAPTCHA, it sends it to the human operator in another country to solve. It’s hard to believe that people fall for scams from spammers, but enough of them do to keep the Internet’s oldest profession alive. So remember kids, just say no to the mail order brides and viagra offers.
