The events of September 11, 2001 devastated the nation, and in particular New York City. So many lives were lost that day, but the every day violence of the city was almost nonexistent--understandably so. Only one homicide took place on 9/11 in New York City.
Around 11:45 PM in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, 46-year-old Henryk Siwiak was fatally shot in the chest. The father of two was a Polish immigrant and was looking for employment when he was killed. His killer has yet to be found eleven years later.
Siwiak came to America hoping to improve his and his family's living situation. He would send money each month to his wife and two children back in Poland. It is unknown why Siwiak was in that particular part of Brooklyn on the night of his murder.
From others' accounts, it seems that he was lost and stumbled into a bad neighborhood. His death was one more tragedy on an already horrific day.
