In 1991, an artificial biosphere was made in the middle of the Sonora Desert. Biosphere 2 was an eight story biosphere made of glass and steel costing $200 million. Four men and four women worked at the biosphere that held 4,000 species of plants and animals. The two year experiment inside the utopia went terribly awry. Everything began dying off and crops began to fail. The sea became acidic and many of its species began dying. The only few survivors of the whole ordeal were millions of crazy ants, nicknamed so for their speedy and erratic behavior when excited.
In 1996, Colombia took over the project and changed their purpose for the elaborate terrarium. Instead of making the terrarium a beautiful utopia, they are seeking to make it an atmospheric nightmare that chokes the life out of the place, leaving many species to die and only some to survive. The idea is to see the effects of what global warming will do.
