What do Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Raven' and Britney Spears' 'Womanizer' have in common?

You wouldn’t normally put Britney Spears and Edgar Allan Poe in the same sentence. Spears’ song, Womanizer, contains a trochaic octameter, which is an odd poetic meter that has eight trochaic metric feet per line. Each foot has one stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable. The trochaic octameter is rarely used, because it is so weird and awkward to use.

It seems appropriate that Edgar Allan Poe used the trochaic octameter is his poem, The Raven. It uses five lines of the trochaic octameter followed by a short half line that by the end of his poem turns into its own refrain. In the song, Womanizer, some words are repeated and lines don’t make complete sense just to keep the trochaic octameter going. It is really odd that they chose to use trochaic octameter in the song at all. So, for the first and probably only time ever, Britney Spears has something artistically in common with the great and dark Edgar Allan Poe.
