Pine cones have genders!
Male pine cones are much smaller then female pine cones which are the ones that are big and spiky, while males are very small and closed in. On average, a male pine cone only has a diameter of 1 or 2 cm.
Both male and female cones grow on the same tree. The male pinecones grow on the lower part of the tree, while the female ones grow on the upper part. How do they ever reproduce then? The pollen comes from the male and the wind blows it into the female. If that creeps you out, don't worry:The pine cones are dead though after they fall off the tree.
