Boxing day grew out of St.Stephen’s day, a Christian holiday that commemorates the first Christian martyr. St.Stephen was a deacon in a church in Jerusalem. After an argument with church members, he was charged with blasphemy. While waiting to for his trial, he suddenly proclaimed he had seen the God the Father the Son. Immediately thereafter, he was stoned to death.
Now, Boxing Day commemorates something a lot less dramatic. Traditionally, it’s a day where your bosses/employers are supposed to give you gifts. However, it is also known as a shopping day similar to Black Friday. Important sporting events are also held on Boxing Day. Some refer to it as Holy Crap Christmas is Over and I’ve Gained Twenty Pounds and am Sinking in Debt and Have to Go Back to Work Tomorrow Holy Crap- Day.
