We’re all familiar with the loveable TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy, right? Elementary school science teachers depended on his TV show to teach their students lessons because he made science interesting. Although not many people are aware that his dad was actually a prisoner of war during World War II!
His father had been held in a Japan for over four years. While there, he became increasingly interested in astronomy and found himself fascinated by it. To pass time during the day, he worked on a sundial so he could figure out the prison camp’s latitudinal coordination!
After the war, his father returned home and went into the sun dial business. Bill Nye has said that his father’s love for sundials and science in general was passed down to him!
