Since 2010, PS3 has used an audio watermark algorithm to detect illegal movie copies.

Verance has been working on Cinavia since 1999. The program is an analog watermarking and steganography system. It was finally released in 2010 and has been mandatory for all Blu-Ray players since 2012. It is designed to stay within the audio signal and to survive all common forms of audio transfer.

It is also designed to withstand digital and analogue sound recording and reproduction by microphone, direct audio connections and broadcasting, and does it by using audio frequencies unheard by the human ear. Cinavia works to prevent copying and pirating by using the watermark to detect unauthorized recordings of media like films.

The point of the program is to prevent all copying of media, including that for reformatting purposes. When the media is checked by Cinavia and it is not an authentic copy, a message appears stating that the media isn’t authorized to play back. Playback and audio then completely stop and the message encourages viewers to check the Cinavia website.
