Her name was Maria Anna Walburga Ignatia Mozart, and like her younger brother Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whe was a musician. When she was seven, her father started teaching her to play the harpsichord, which is generally considered to be the precursor to the piano (originally called the fortepiano).
She and her brother were taken on tours of many cities to showcase their talents. Additionally, she received top billing and was noted as an excellent harpsichord and fortepiano player. But as she grew older, her career came to a halt. It was partly due to the views of her parents, but overall due to the view of society.
From 1769, when she was 18, and onwards, she was no longer allowed to play with her brother when travelling. Why? Simply because she was of marriageable age. It’s believed that she continued to write musical compositions due to letters from her brother, but none of these have survived.
Marianne fell in love with Franz d’Ippold, who was a captain and private tutor, but because (unlike her brother) she obeyed their father, she had to decline d’Ippold’s marriage proposal, as their father disapproved. Eventually she did marry, and gave birth to three kids. She died on 29 October 1829, and unfortunately we'll never know how great a musician she could have gone on to be.
