The first deaths that have ever resulted from grizzly bears in a national park have some crazy coincidences!

The first two people ever mauled to death by grizzly bears in a national park took place in 1967. In Glacier National Park on August 13th, two different camping groups were both taking hiking trips before returning to university. They both entered remote parts of the park and slept in cabins without electricity or contact. When the sun went down, all campers went to sleep, until one heard a sound and woke up. Roy Ducat went to explore the noise and returned soon after thinking is was just a squirrel. His partner, Julie Helgeson, then ordered him to play dead because a bear was in the vicinity.

Before he knew what was happening, Ducat was thrown from his sleeping bag and Helgeson was taken off with the bear screaming. At the other camp sight, Michelle Koons was sleeping when her group also heard a bear. They also tried to play dead, but eventually someone angered the bear and he attacked Koons, also dragging her away screaming. This is where the story gets really weird. Both of the women taken were 19 years old. They had both been mauled by bears before being carried off with them on the same night, only nine miles apart.

The strangest part? It wasn’t the same bear. Two separate bears had committed almost identical acts, on the same night, to almost identical victims and for the first time killed humans in the park! Do you think it was just a coincidence?
