Belinda McClory plays Switch in The Matrix. At her audition she was only trying out for half of the role, though. The original idea for Switch was that it would be played by two androgynous actors.
In the real world, Switch was to be a man, but in the Matrix he was a she. That is, Switch was represented in female form whilst in the Matrix. Hence the name “Switch.” Warner Brothers revised the idea, though, and McClory won the role of Switch as a single female role in both environments.
The road to find a Neo proved to be a harder task it seems. Nicolas Cage was asked to play Neo, but turned it down due to family commitments. Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio were also considered for the role. Will Smith was asked to be Neo, but he turned it down to star in Wild Wild West. He later said it was a mistake to turn down the role, but he would have screwed it up anyways, because he wasn’t mature enough as an actor.
