The Big Things of Australia are a group of somewhat related objects that are sculpted or structures that are large. There are supposedly over 150 of the objects scattered throughout Australia. The first Big Thing was built in 1963 in Medindie, Adelaide and is called the Big Scotsman. Most of the Big Things are placed along major roads between destinations. They’re meant to be tourist attractions that have become a cult phenomenon.
They’re even used as an excuse for road trips and used as the backdrop to group photos. Many of the Big Things are considered folk art and have been heritage listed. Some other Big Things include a Giant Apple, The Big Beer Can, the Big Bench, the Big Blue Heeler, and the Big Gold Planner. There are numerous items of food on the Big Things list, as well as animals, instruments, and other objects like a guitar.
