Margaret Gorman was born in 1905. At the age of 16 she was crowned “Miss District of Colombia” because of her athletic ability and personality. Because she won this title, Gorman was invited to Atlantic City to participate in the “Inner-City Beauty Contest.” She won that title too and gained more attention for becoming the “Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America,” by Bather’s Revue.
Gorman was expected to win Miss District of Colombia the following year, but before she could participate in the pageant another woman was crowned. Instead, Gorman was simply crowned “Miss America.” After winning the title Gorman was flocked with reporters and when asked for a statement she was quoted in saying, “I never cared to be Miss America. It wasn’t my idea. I am so bored by it all. I really want to forget the whole thing.”
Many women today would go to the ends of the World to win such a title, yet strangely Gorman considered the whole thing trivial!
