Sex-deprived Fruit Flies get drunk to cope!
Scientists have found that when fruit flies haven't mated in a while, they're more likely to intake alcohol, while recently-mated flies are more likely to pass it up. That's right, lack of sex makes fruit flies drink!
Looking at brain chemistry, the researchers found that there is a lower level of a chemical called NPF which they think plays a role in the fly's reward system. When they do something evolutionarily good, like mating or eating, there is an increase in NPF. However, NPF can also be raised by other things, like alcohol. Apparently it works similarly to a human compound called NPY which has been found to have a link to behaviors like overeating.
