European swimmers first rejected the front crawl swimming style as being barbaric. As a result, the Native Americans easily beat them!
You might also know the front crawl as freestyle stroke. They've become synonymous because the front crawl is the preferred stroke in freestyle competitions because it's so much faster than all the others.
Although the front crawl has been used since ancient times, it wasn't seen by the Western world until a 1844 swimming competition in London, where Native North Americans used it. The English gentlemen considered the style to be barbaric and un-European. They were particularly appalled by the considerable splashing that the stroke generated, and decided to keep swimming breaststroke. They lost to the Native Americans.
