The Spice Girls are a British pop girl group originally formed in 1991. Their debut single, “Wannabe” hit number-one in over 98 countries and is what started them as a global phenomenon. While many compare Justin Bieber’s persona to a modern day version of the Spice Girls, even his successes are nothing compared to the five girls. Their debut album “Spice” sold over 28 million copies worldwide and is the best selling album by a female group in history. As of today, they have sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Amazingly, between the years 1996-1998 alone they are estimated to have earned $750-950 million and each of them earned up to $75 million per year! Under the guidance of Simon Fuller and Virgin Records, they became one of the most successful marketing engines ever by releasing merchandise, movies, television promotions, and extensive radio coverage.
In fact the names Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh, and Sporty are the most recognizable as a group since John, Paul, George, and Ringo! According to a survey done by Trivial Pursuit, 80% of those surveyed responded that the term “Girl Power” is the best way to define the 1990’s!
