Neptune’s moon Triton will one day be destroyed by the gravitation forces of Neptune.
Turns out that Triton isn’t as mighty and powerful as the mythological Greek god after which it is named. This moon is unique among all large moons in the Solar System for its retrograde orbit around its planet. Triton is also in synchronous rotation with Neptune, meaning that one of its faces is staring at the planet at all times.
But this loyal moon doesn’t know what it’s in for. In about 3.6 billion years from now, Triton will pass within Neptune’s Roche Limit- the distance within which it will disintegrate due to Neptune’s tidal forces. This will either result in a collision with Neptune’s atmosphere or the break-up of Tital to form a ring system similar to the one found around Saturn.
