Hard cider is a fermented alcoholic beverage made exclusively from apple juice. You may even know it by its other name; “apple wine.” Cider is particularly popular in the UK, especially in South West England and East Anglia. In fact, the UK has the highest per capita consumptions of cider. But cider has a notable presence within the US as well, particularly within US history.
During the colonial times, apple cider was consumed as the main beverage with meals because water was often unsafe for drinking. In fact, even American legend Johnny Appleseed (who little kids read about in elementary school) originally set out to plant apples for hard cider, not eating.
