Do you love Guinness Beer? Thank a statistician for the taste you love.

It's no secret that beer is the beverage of choice for some men (and women!).  Guinness beer, invented in 1759 by Arthur Guinness, has stood the test of time and is still enjoyed by millions today.

In an effort to better their product, Guinness hired a statistician named William Sealy Gosset in 1899.  Gosset invented the T-Test, a system for testing small samples of product and comparing it to the rest of the beer to ensure premium quality.

Gosset's statistical formula for the T-Test was unique and desired by many in the manufacturing industry.  Guinness finally allowed Gosset to publish his formula, but only after ensuring that competitors couldn't use it.

Gosset's formula is still used to ensure high quality in manufacturing, though he was never able claim fame for his discovery.  Guinness assigned him the pseudonym "Student" to avoid problems with others on his staff.  Therefore, today, the test is referred to as "Student's T-Test."
