Every US State except Utah has more women than men in college
Since 1970, the male to female ratio of college students has been steadily swaying towards the females. Public universities first witnessed the shift in enrollment, but private universities soon followed the new enrollment trend.
All around, public universities carry the closest ratio of female to male students averaging 43.6 percent male students and 56.4 female students. It seems like a decent gap, but not compared to private universities who average 40.7 percent male students and 59.3 percent female students. A 40 to 60 ratio of students at a private college is pretty significant.
Utah is the only state that has an even ratio of male and female students in their public colleges. It is also very close to a 50-50 split in the private schools. Interestingly, there are regional differences, too. Three of the five states with the largest male to female disparities are from Southeastern US states. On the other hand, no Southeastern school appears on the top five lists of closest male to female ratios.
