Ancient Romans aren't known for their scholarly achievements, they are known for being a little brutish and not overly intelligent.
The Romans are also known for eating a lot of food - well at least the emperors, and eating delicacies from all around their empire. One of these delicacies was a plant known as 'laser' or rather, 'laserpithium' if you want to get scientific.
Laserpithium was, according to Roman writers, so delicious, that every chef in the Roman empire wanted to use it in their food. The plant grew naturally in Libya, so naturally, the Romans went to Libya and literally harvested the plant to the point of extinction.
It is said that laserpithium tasted "of indescribable deliciousness, akin to garlic, but far more tasty."
