Maggot Therapy is a type of biotherapy, where doctors will purposely put disinfected maggots (fly larvae) into non-healing skin and soft tissue wounds of a human or animal.
This is done for the purpose of cleaning out the dead tissue within a wound to prevent infection! It wouldn't be my first choice of medication, but hey, everyone's different.
In 2004, the FDA granted permission to produce and market maggots "for use in humans or animals as a prescription-only medical device for the following indications...
For debriding non-healing necrotic skin and soft tissue wounds, including pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, neuropathic foot ulcers, and non-healing traumatic or post-surgical wounds."
In Canada, Europe and Japan, maggots are classified as medicinal drugs, whereas in the United States they are classified as medical devices! A simple prescription from doctors can get you all the maggots you desire to clean your wounds.
Remember: The FDA will let you stick maggots into your wounds, but won't let you smoke marijuana because it is way too dangerous.
