We all have irrational fears - even the founding father and first president of the United States, George Washington. Washington didn't fear spiders or the dark. Instead, he feared being buried alive. To be fair, if that were to happen, it would not be a pleasant experience. However, the chances of it happening are quite small.

This fear is actually one of the most widespread human fears though. And live burial does happen every so often. There have been recorded instances of people seeming to be dead and mistakenly buried. Sometimes, this is discovered just in time by dropping a coffin or attempting a dissection.

In order to avoid being buried alive, George Washington, while on his death bed, made his servants promise to wait two days to bury him. That would give him plenty of time to come back to life if he weren't truly dead.
