Whales milk is similar in constancy as toothpaste!
While many mammal babies drink milk directly from their mother's teat, whale mothers actually actively squirt the milk into their calves' mouths. This milk is so rich in fat that it has the thick consistency of toothpaste. This nursing goes on for about a year and closely bonds mother and calf.
Whales only give birth to one baby at a time and pay great attention to their offspring. While this mode of reproduction produces fewer babies, it gives each of them a better chance of survival. As they raise their calves, whale mothers teach and whale babies learn. Whales are also known to socialize, cooperate, and even grieve.
