Rope was released in 1948 and was an Alfred Hitchcock production. Filming times were long, so long that everyone on set tried really hard to not make any mistakes that would make them reshoot anything. At one point during filming, the dolly ran over a cameraman’s foot and broke it. To continue filming, they gagged him, so he wouldn’t make any noise, and dragged him out of the studio. Another time, a woman set her glass down on the table, but missed it. A stagehand had to rush up and catch it before it hit the ground. Both parts made the final cut.
The film was shot in just ten takes. Each take varied between four and a half to ten minutes in length. That is the maximum amount of time that a camera magazine could hold. Hitchcock got the idea to take such long shots from the BBC Television broadcast of Rope in 1939.
