Torn Australian bills can be redeemed for the % of the bill remaining!
It's a huge bummer if you're carrying a large banknote and it somehow gets torn and you lose part of it. However, if you're Australian, don't worry too much. The government's got your back.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has the following guidelines for determining the value of torn bills:
- If less than 20% of the bill is missing: it's worth the entire value of the bill
- If somewhere between 20- and 80% of the bill is missing: Value is paid in proportion of the percentage remaining. Half a $10 bill is worth $5, for example.
- If more than 80% of the bill is missing: It has no value.
