Howard Hughes used to make hotel staff hide sandwiches for him in trees!

The exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel has its share of celebrity stories, though, most they don’t repeat. The sprawling hotel boasts 12 acres and 208 rooms. Its architect, Elmer Grey, also built 23 private bungalows in the Mediterranean style edifice. The hotel is known for catering to the eccentricities of the rich and famous, as well as keeping their secrets. Now, the hotel is over 100 years old and going strong.

Howard Hughes was a regular at the hotel from 1942 until his death in 1976. Known for being reclusive, Hughes was quite the eccentric man. He had the hotel staff place a working phone booth in his room, because he didn’t want to go through the hotel operator. He had the staff place his roast beef sandwiches in the crook of trees for him to retrieve. He’d go on 2 a.m. treasure hunts for freshly baked pineapple upside-down cakes that staff had hidden on the grounds for him.
