There were several changes made to comic book hulk to turn him into TV hulk. For one thing, he could not speak. In the comic book Hulk’s degree of speaking ability has varies over the year but on television he communicated mainly through growling and groaning like he was perpetually trapped in Monday morning.
Additionally, TV Hulk was more “human” in the sense that he retained pain and injury while comic book hulk could not be injured. The name of Hulk’s comic book alter ego, Dr. Bruce Banner, was also changed to Dr. David Banner for the TV series. At the time, they said that the name change was done to ensure that the TV series was not perceived as the comic book series.
According to Lou Ferrigno however, it was also changed because CBS thought the name Bruce sounded “too gay-ish.” Ultimately however, Brice became TV Banner’s middle name. It is visible on Banner’s tombstone at the end of the pilot movie and that footage is shown at the beginning of every episode in the series.
