According to the American Kennel Club website: “Sprayed or neutered dogs are not eligible to compete in conformation classes at dog shows, because the purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding stock.” Many of an issue with this policy, saying the it encourages overbreeding.
This overbreeding is the reason why three to four million dogs are put down in shelters every year. Additionally, spaying or neutering a dog ensures that it is happier and better behaved in the long term. Critics of this policy believe that it treats dogs not as if they were animals, but as if they were things.
It suggests that owners should keep breeding dogs until they find a puppy that is physically perfect, without any regard for any of the dogs’ health or happiness. Dog may be man’s best friend, but sometimes it seems like it doesn’t work the other way around.
