Drinking one can of soda a day increases your chances of getting type 2 diabetes by 22%!
The largest study of the link between soft-drink consumption and Type 2 diabetes in Europe has found that sweetened beverages not only cause weight gain, but are also linked with increased chances of getting type 2 diabetes.
The increased risk didn't discriminate between overweight and normal weighted people either. Even those who didn't gain much weight from drinking soda saw an increased risk in getting diabetes.
You might think that the problem lies in the sugar itself, so things like fruit juices also increase the risk. While the data is more fuzzy on these, they did not find a link between diabetes and fruit juice. The reason, scientists think, might be that anti-oxidants in fruit juices counter the effect on sugar.
