About a year go, we told you that the CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos had funded a mission that had located the 5 Apollo 11 engines at the bottom of the ocean floor. At the time, it wasn’t known what the condition of the engines was and whether they’d be able to successfully retrieve them.
Well, a year later, Bezos announced on his website that they had been able to recover 2 of the engines and they’re in the process of being restored for display. Bezos wrote: We’ve seen an underwater wonderland—an incredible sculpture garden of twisted F-1 engines that tells the story of a fiery and violent end, one that serves testament to the Apollo program.”
The engines are still the property of NASA. Beezos hopes that one of them will go to the Smithsonian’s Air and Space museum and that the other go to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, which is near Amazon’s headquarters.
