In 1996, the federal government passed a resolution that required departments to change all construction documents to metric, measuring concrete in kilograms instead of pounds, for example.
The town of St. Peters Missouri took that to mean that they needed to switch EVERYTHING from Imperial to Metric units. So to comply, they started changing their town’s speed limit road signs to kilometers per hour to miles per hour.
Town officials insisted on the change, despite the fact that many people thought it was foolish and also not required by the government at all. Think about it… if you see a road sign that says 60, you’ll think that you can go 60mph, when the conversion means that really you can only go about 37mph.
We tried to see if the metric signs are still up in St. Peters but we couldn’t find it. If we got any readers from there, let us know in the comments!
