Canada’s last duel was between two men who were so scared they fainted!
This duel would probably not very notable, if it weren’t for the fact that it’s the last duel recorded in Canada. In 1873, two men Mr. Dooley and Mr. Healy declared a duel because they had fallen in love with the same woman.
The morning of the duel came. They walked the 10 yards, turned and fired; Dooley hit the ground immediately. Healy was seized with horror thinking he’d killed Dooley. He soon found out, however, that Healy had just fainted from fear.
Here’s the funny twist, both men’s seconds later confessed that they had loaded the pistols with blanks. This was a serious breach of etiquette. However, both men agreed that honor had been satisfied and they didn’t need to redo the duel.
