In 1970 Sesame Street was banned in Mississippi because of it's racially integrated cast

Sesame Street, the uber popular children's show, began in 1969. The show was met with critical acclaim and was well-received by the majority of viewers. However, in 1970, Sesame Street was banned in the state of Mississippi.

The show featured a multi-cultural cast, and in fact, had a minority of white actors. Mississippi felt that it's viewers were not ready for such an integrated cast. After the national news picked up the story of the ban, Mississippi received a great deal of pressure from the rest of the country. They then reversed the decision.

Seems that Mississipians weren't the only ones who took issue with the composition of the cast. Sesame Street got complaints that it was too male-dominated and that there were not enough Hispanics on it. You can't please everyone.
