Hollywood is responsible for a herd of Bison thriving in Catalina Island!
In 1924, a movie studio decided to film a silent movie called The Vanishing Dream. To film this, they brought in a small herd of Bison into California’s Catalina Island. After the shoot, they left the herd there and it is thriving.
The herd grew to be as many as 600 individuals at some point. However, the Catalina Island Conservancy has been trying to keep their numbers down and has even put them under birth control so that their number doesn’t go higher than their current 150.
