At the 1996 Olympics, a security guard discovered a pipe bomb, alerted police, helped evacuate. The media then accused him of planting it!

His name was Richard Jewell, and he was an American police officer who became famous for the incident where he discovered a pipe bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. After all the fuss, he was first hailed by the media as a hero, but was shortly after considered a suspect by the FBI.

He was as a result a victim of what is commonly known as a “trial by media,” where without any proper charges or court hearing, the media decides that a person is guilty. This type of thing is seen very commonly, most recently with the Trayvon Martin killing. It took nine years, but eventually he was completely exonerated when another man was found to be the bomber.

Unfortunately, he died not long after at the age of 44 due to a struggle with heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes.
