Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is a feature length French-Japanese animated film based on the album Discovery by Daft Punk. The film tells the story of the abduction and rescue of an interstellar pop band, and each track on the album is one episode of that story.
The film was produced by Daft Punk and four other people and has no dialogue and minimal sound. It was released in 2003, but the idea for Interstella 5555 first came about during the early days of Discovery's recording.
Daft Punk envisioned a film that would merge science fiction and the entertainment industry cultures. Along with their collaborator, Cedric Hervet, Daft Punk brought the story for the film to Tokyo to try and make it with their childhood hero Leiji Matsumoto.
The first four episodes of the film were shown on MTV and Cartoon Network in 2001. The full film was released with Daft Punk's album, Discovery, in 2003. It was generally well-received by critics.
