Deer live in such harmony with humans in Nara, Japan that they bow when you give them treats!

In the cities of Nara, Japan civilized human beings and wild deer coexist in harmony. Local mythology says that a deity named Takemikazuchi arrived at the old capital on a white deer to act as its protector.

Due to this legend, for the last 1,300 years, the wild deer have been considered sacred. In the streets of Nara, you are just as likely to bump into a deer as you to a person.

The city seems to go out of its way to feed the deer. There are dozens of vendors and vending machines selling deer crackers.

While a little bit spoiled from hundreds of years of special treatment, the deer are so well socialized that they will bow in exchange for treats.
