North Dakota might not technically be a state because of a single word!
An omission from the 1889 state constitution means that the legal status of North Dakota being a US state might be in question. North Dakotans are going to vote to add in a single word to their constitution that would rectify this.
When the Nort Dakota constitution was written up, they said that officials in the "legislative assembly and judicial department" must take an oath to uphold the constitution. By not including the word executive, they defied the US constitution. Although in practical terms adding the word back or keeping the word out isn't going to make a difference, the state is voting on amending it later this year.
