A class of 8-10 year olds was guided by their teacher in an experiment involving bee behavior. Their experiment revealed that bumble bees can use a combination of color and spatial relationships in deciding which color of flower to forage from.
It is an exciting discovery that deepens our knowledge of the buff-tailed bumble bee and is described in an accompanying commentary as a "significant piece of research giving a novel insight in the color and pattern vision of the bee".
The research paper that followed the experiment was written by the kids and therefore written in “kid friendly” terms and the accompanying diagrams and drawings are in crayon.
Their research and paper was published in the prestigious magazine Science as the editor’s choice. It is the second most downloaded paper on Biology Letters, too!
They are the youngest group to ever publish and have a magazine publish their scientific findings.
