Have you ever devoured a piece of German chocolate cake and thought to yourself, “Man, this is soooo good, I want to move to Germany!” Well, better not buy the plane ticket yet, because German chocolate cake did NOT originate in Germany!
The truth is, the delectable confection comes straight from the good ole’ U.S. of A., and has been around for a long time. The cake’s history begins with a man by the name of Sam German who developed a brand of dark baking chocolate that was known as “Baker German’s Sweet Chocolate” in the early 1850's.
Then, on June 3, 1957, a recipe for "German's Chocolate Cake" appeared as the "Recipe of the Day" in the Dallas Morning Star. The cake was created by Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker from Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. Clay’s recipe used the baking chocolate introduced 105 years prior and became quite popular. The name of the cake eventually evolved to German chocolate cake, and its rich chocolatey goodness is still enjoyed by millions today.
