It’s surprising, but there is an actual difference between a gift and a present. And after reading this article, you’ll never have to worry about mixing the two words up again.
A gift is essentially giving someone in one way or another something that you own, for whatever reason. However, a present is a gift that must be ‘presented’ to the person you are giving it to.
So if you’re mailing something to Grandma for her birthday, it’s actually a ‘gift’ and not a ‘present’.
If you’re at a wedding and you walk up and hand the bride and groom their gift, it’s actually a ‘present’. Confusing, isn’t it?
