Diamond encrusted statues, gold and jewels that had accumulated over 150 years were uncovered in a temple in Trivandrum, India. The treasure was never a secret though. It was simply sealed away but was always on public record. The precious objects were mostly donated over the years by temple devotees.
The temple has been under the watch of descendants of the royal family of Travancore, who believe themselves servants to the deity of the temple. Searchers were able to open five of the six vaults within the structure but the sixth one remains sealed. They were able to open the outer door but an iron wall stands in their way. Just what remains behind this wall is not known.
An inscription on the door says that opening it will be a bad omen. This likely did not stop searchers from attempting to get in. At the time the treasure was uncovered, valuing at $22 billion was a conservative estimate. It was not decided who the treasure belonged to.
