William H. Gates, better known as Bill Gates, is the chairman and chief executive of the Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest personal computer software company. Known almost as well for his wealth as for his contribution to the computer industry, one might be surprised to know that Bill has never been one for conspicuous consumption.
In fact, for years, even as Gates’ wealth grew (eventually reaching $40 billion), he would still fly coach. He was known for throwing a blanket over his head and falling asleep during flights. However, in 1997 when Gates was the wealthiest man in the world, he finally broke down and bought his own private jet for $21 million. He bought the plane himself, though, rather than have Microsoft buy it as a private jet.
Microsoft employees aren’t allowed to fly first class and can only upgrade to business class on international flights. According to a spokesperson, Gates only bought the private jet because he was traveling so much that it made sense.
