The term “Third World” is commonly thrown around among scholars and those who pretend to know what they’re talking about, but in nearly every daily usage it is misused! Most people think it simply means poor, antiquated, or uncivilized, and while a Third World country can include those things, they are not what makes them The term originated during the Cold War.

Those allied with the United States and the Western powers were considered the “First World.” The “Second World” were countries affiliated with the U.S.S.R. and communism. This meant that the majority of the world, which was not affiliated with either side, was simply summed up as the Third World.
