Alaska may be the largest state in the United States, but that doesn’t mean it has the biggest population. You can’t really blame American citizens for not moving up there in droves either. It takes a special kind of person to survive the constant light of summer, constant dark of winter and frigid temperatures. However, some people do make the move, and Alaska’s total population is a bit over 600,000 people.
Most people cluster in the large city of Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. Keep in mind that the average temperature in January in Anchorage is 13 degrees while it’s -11 degrees in Fairbanks. The total land area of Alaska is 586,412 square miles! Considering Alaska’s total population, this makes for very few people per square mile. To put it in perspective, if Manhattan had as many people per square mile as Alaska, there would only be 14 people living there. That would be one lonely city.
