Medieval monks bitched a lot on the margins of books they wrote. Check out some examples
If you’ve ever thought that monks in the medieval times were men who took their line of work very seriously without complaint, you were wrong. In fact, while copying out very large manuscripts, they found enough time to complain on the sides of the page that they were writing on! Historians believe they learned more about the life of a monk from these simple remarks in the margins of books!
Some of the complaints say things such as “I am very cold” or even “Oh my hand”! Don’t worry; it gets a little more unusual. In one case, a monk wrote “Now I’ve written the whole thing: for Christ’s sake give me a drink”! It should be noted that they said this while copying a religious text about Christ!
